Development of topical natural based film forming system loaded propolis from stingless bees for wound healing application

Abstract
Purpose: Propolis extract is an extraction of a resinous mixture of honey bees produced by mixing saliva and beeswax with exudate gathered from tree. The prominent pharmacological activities of propolis extract are antioxidant, antimicrobial, fungicidal, antiviral, antiulcer, immune-stimulating, and cytostatic, which are very suitable for topical formulation.

Methods: From its various pharmacological activities, propolis extract was formulated in film forming system using modified tamarind seed gum as a solution/gel/film forming agent. To obtain the optimum seed gum concentration of the film forming system (solution to film), various tamarind concentrations and solvent ratios were evaluated.

Results: The formulation of 7.5% of modified tamarind seed gum with 1% PEG400 dissolved in 55%:45% of water:ethanol provided fast drying time (4.36 min) and proper rheological property for spaying application. The propolis extract loaded formulation could inhibit Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Moreover, the product satisfaction evaluation was excellent (3.8 from 5).

Conclusion: The results indicate the possibility of introducing modified tamarind seed gum and propolis extract as a component in the development of film forming systems and increasing the effectiveness of antibacterial on the skin.
